Crypto Swap Fees Explained
What do you actually pay to swap crypto? We break down the spread, network fees, and 'hidden' costs — and how to get the best rate on every swap.
The headline rate isn't the whole story. The amount you actually receive in a swap is shaped by three things: the spread, the network fee, and the quality of the rate you're routed to. Understand all three and you'll never overpay.
1. The spread
The spread is the small margin between the mid-market price and the price you're quoted. It's how swap providers earn revenue. A transparent service folds the spread into the quote, so the number you see is the number you receive.
Spreads vary by pair: deep, liquid pairs like BTC/ETH carry tighter spreads than thin, low-volume altcoins.
2. Network (gas) fees
Every on-chain transfer pays the source network's fee — gas on Ethereum, sats/vByte on Bitcoin, and so on. This goes to validators/miners, not the swap service.
You can lower network fees by swapping during quieter periods or using cheaper networks (e.g. an L2 or a fast chain) for the legs you control.
How to get the best rate
Compare providers (or use an aggregator that does it for you), prefer liquid pairs, mind network congestion, and always check the final receive amount — not just the headline rate — before confirming.
Frequently asked questions
What is a fair spread for a crypto swap?
For major pairs, well under 1% is typical. Thin altcoin pairs run higher because liquidity is scarcer.
Are there hidden fees in crypto swaps?
With a transparent service, no — the quote already includes the spread and network fees. The real 'hidden' cost is being routed to a worse-than-best rate, which aggregation avoids.
Who receives the network fee?
The blockchain's validators or miners, not the swap provider. It's the cost of settling your transfer on-chain.
How can I pay the lowest swap fees?
Use an aggregator to capture the best rate, swap liquid pairs, and time transfers for lower network congestion.
